Thing About Episode 4: MEL NEL SPELL

The universe couldn't have doled out a more magical Solstice evening to gather in Fort Greene Park and cast a spell. Mel Nelson led a thoughtful ceremony for us to cross into official summer and the second half of the seasonal year. We began with a guided meditation, breath work and vibrational humming to tune in and center. Mel offered lotus tea, reminding us of the lotus's wise and watery ability to go from muck to blossom. We reflected on our strongest memories of the year thus far, what are some burning desires in this time of peak light, what took too much of our energy and what makes us feel lighter. Last, we used keywords from our reflections to create a spell:
Softening sweetness
I'm gathering moments
Pull at the thread of myself
Invest in our collective
The circle discussed the desire to be soft & sweet vs societal conditioning to be in our masc energy. Softening in tough moments can feel scary but requires strength! One example: being on the receiving end of online hostility for sharing political views. It's so easy to forget online that these are personal conversations, often with people we know (and even if they we don't, they're still people!). The challenge is to come out of the feeling of being attacked and instead soften and remind the other that we are in a conversation, not a war (at least with each other).
Other agreements:
1) Family visits are not vacations.
2) Memories we have are an indicator of the priorities we hold. We hold firmest onto what is important to us.
On the flip side, letting go of things that have been important to us can make space for new things to enter. We had an exchange of clothing, media, plants (!) et al that left some lighter of load and some richer for receiving. The group agreed that adding a component of resourcing/gifting/donating is something we'd like to integrate into the meetings. In the future, we will pass a hat or put out a call for donations of time/money/materials at each meeting. No pressure to contribute, but this group feels like a fountain of abundance that we'd like to spill out into the world. The spotlight host for the month will have first option to decide where proceeds are channeled.
