Thing About Episode 5: HANNAH WINKLER "WATCH OUT"

Maybe overcoming a rain date rescheduling, a thrown out back, and a canceled dog walker (amongst other challenges) made the grand success of our filming day that much sweeter. I feel confident that Hannah's video for "Watch Out" is going to be a smash!

Our make-up day weather was what we'd been waiting for, and as we rolled up to our shoot location to discover a random campout, even the idea of sharing this very public space seemed like a sign that we were on the right track. All 11(!) participants and producers jumped into action, laying out a feast of colorful wardrobe options. Throughout the shoot, Monty Montan styled us to read more "United Colors of Benetton" than "Goodwill sale rack" (though truthfully, some great fits were thrift or secondhand). Abbey McBride turned our monthly shakeout dance moves into a flock of dancers, carrying the message of Hannah's anthem to the max. Amanda Nascarella and Haidi Cruz worked as one to capture the myriad angles of movement magic happening. Thank god for Amanda and Hannah mapping out a shot list in the days leading up that acted as our Fairy Guideline to create the arc of the visual story. Professionals!

Not to be dramatic, but this was my first experience working with a group wherein each person's specific talents were showcased in the exact right context and with the exact right timing. I felt as supported as in a salty ocean wave that the next idea would come with confidence and direction from the person who knew the answer. At one point, the group was laying in a dance puddle while flowers were being strewn over us, and I wondered, "Is this the future of collaborative creativity?" I hope so!

I'd like to give some special trophies to participants who went above and beyond:

MOST PATIENT PRODUCER: Lulu Montan-Berezin - Watched us move and groove for hours on end without tossing a reusable water balloon or fruit snack at us to hurry us along. Lulu's a champ! Thank you Monty for infusing us with her adorable energy.

FURTHEST TRAVELED TO SHOOT: Julie Silva - I'm not positive this is an accurate award, but Julie came from Queens to be with us in P. Park, and that's a haul!

PLAYING WHILE INJURED: Emily Jackson - Emily, who threw her back out the night before, showed up ready to rock and may have danced her back into place over the course of shooting???

TOOK THE MOST HEAT: Amanda Nascarella and Haidi Cruz - Our videographers somehow both ended up standing in full sun for the duration of filming while the dance troupe gleefully leapt about in the highly photogenic dappled shade.

MADE THE TIME: Kendall Gough and Abbey McBride - Both went directly to other appointments following the shoot. Thank you for fitting us in and staying for every last minute possible!!

DOWN FOR WHATEVER WINNER: Rachel Parks - Agreed to participate just the night before with very little information or assurance that this wasn't a cult.

OWNED HER SPIRIT: Hannah Winkler - Watching Hannah belt out her song over and over, while cueing us on what each verse meant to her was totally inspiring and fearless. Cannot wait for her full album to come out!!
